Siquijor : Braving the unknown , unveiling the truth

Me : O sa Thursday pupunta kami sa Siquijor.Monday evening na ako balik.
Sis A: Ha Ate?Siquijor?Astig!!!
Sis B: Hala ate.'Wag ka magsusungit doon ha?!
Tita: Ano??! Siquijor?!

Cleanest port I've ever seen. I MEAN SERIOUSLY :)

I believe majority would have the same reaction. Siquijor, an island in Central Visayas is known for witchcraft, sorcery and  love potions among others. But the island born of fire is mystical and magical in its own right.

From the Dumaguete airport, we wasted no time and hurried to the pier to Siquijor. We headed to Siquijor port since our guide Kuya Joam will be meeting us there.Another main entry point is Larena Port, where vessels bound for Dapitan are found.

Siquijor Island tour

We hopped on his trusty tricycle and sped towards the nearby St. Francis of Assisi Church. We were able to visit Santa Maria Church, San Isidro Labrador Church and Convent in Lazi, Cambugahay Falls, Biggest Balete Tree, Capilay Springs Park in San Juan, San Juan Church and Belltower,San Juan Beach and Salagdoong Beach.

St.Francis of Assisi Church

Right across the church is its belfry

Capilay Springs in San Juan. Since it was a weekend, there were lots of kids jumping into the water like acrobats :)) Galing nila magswimming :)

We went back to Capilay Springs the following day

Enigmatic Balete tree

The Balete tree was huge. I'm not sure if the one in Camiguin is bigger though. There's a natural spring or "bukal" at the foot of the tree. Aside from the free fish spa service, locals do their laundry here (may batya pang dala si Kuya oh). The steps were very slippery because of moss so please be careful.

Lazi Church

Limestones were used in building these massive structures. I don't know if it's just me, but I love touching the walls of old churches, old houses and ruins. Weird noh? :)

Fine ropes and nets are nailed to the entrance gates

The entrance gates of the Lazi Church have nets because birds love to build their nests on the church's ceiling. :)

Photo-op with Ms. Eileen of Possibly Pinay and James of Journeying James in Lazi Convent

Okay so I knew James was in Siquijor but I never expected that I'll bump into him plus Ms. Eileen in Lazi Convent. After mustering all the courage I had, (mahiyain kaya ako LOL ), I asked for a photo op.Kuya Joam was like "Sino yun? Ba't kayo nagpapicture?" :)

Santa Maria Chuch

The miraculous Santa Rita de Cascia

I was a little hesitant at first, but she was not as scary as I thought. She had a skull clutched in her right hand and an inverted crucifix on her left. Locals said that she is a nightwalker because they observed that her feet is sometimes soiled in the morning.

Cambugahay Falls

I'm not into waterfalls but, the multi-level Cambugahay, with its beautiful cascading falls, was just exceptional. We went there on a Sunday but since it was a little crowded, we had to go back the following day. If only I could sit here all day.

Salagdoong Beach can be reached by passing through this forest.

Salagdoong Beach

Salagdoong Beach Resort is a government owned facility. It reveals its rocky shores during low tide however, on the opposite side, there is a small cove that is more suitable for swimming. They built water slides and platforms for cliff jumping. Unfortunately, I was too scared to try the 25 foot cliff jump.:)

For room rates and contact information, click here. When we were there end of August they were building beach front cabanas.

One of the attractions in Siquijor that has historical significance is the rustic
Cang-Isok House said to be the oldest house in the province .It was built in the mid-1800's. We weren't able to check the interiors though because no one was around to ask for permission.

At the end of the tricycle tour Kuya Joam found us a spartan-no frills-type of accommodation. The cheapest room in North Haven Lodge is Php300 for 2 persons. They also have an airconditioned room for Php1000. It is a 5 minute walk from Larena Port and about 50 meters from Siquijor State College. Computer shops and food stalls are abundant because of the student population which makes the location very convenient.

Cheap accommodations are also found in San Juan , Siquijor but because of the NE wind or Amihan, the beach area was filled with sea grass. Another thing was that unfortunately, a few days before our trip,Lorna's End of the World Resort was burned into ashes.

Sunrise from our Php 400 attic room :)

I was looking for shamans and black magic and the famed mangkukulam. But this was what I found while getting lost in Siquijor :)
